We cannot get him out like that: Rohit Sharma’s sporting gesture of not getting Dasun Shanaka out win hearts | XtraTime

Xtra Time Web Desk: Team India skipper Rohit Sharma’s sporting gesture towards Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka won hearts during the first ODI at Barsapara Cricket Stadium on Tuesday. Shanaka, who was batting on 98 not out left his crease too early at the non-striker’s end only to find the bails dislodged by Mohammed Shami at non striker’s end. But in a sporting gesture, Rohit decided not to continue with the appeal, thereby allowing Shanaka to reach his maiden ODI hundred.

“I had no idea Shami did that (run-out), he was batting on 98. The way he batted was brilliant, we cannot get him out like that. Not something that we thought off, hats off to him, he played really well,” Rohit said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

The incident took place during the fourth ball of the 50th over. After Shami’s run-out appeal was withdrawn by India, the Sri Lanka skipper hit a boundary to complete his century on the penultimate ball of the innings. Sri Lankan skipper hit a six on the final ball as well as the visitors fell short by 67 runs.

Former Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews hailed Rohit Sharma’s gesture as he tweeted, “Not many captains would do this but hats off to ⁦Rohit Sharma⁩ for withdrawing the appeal even though the law says so! Displaying great sportsmanship”
