Congress slams Dhankhar’s ‘attack on judiciary’ | India News

NEW DELHI: Terming them as “warning to the Constitution loving citizens” and “extraordinary attack on the judiciary”, Congress on Thursday condemned vice president Jagdeep Dhankar’s remarks on the Constitution’s “basic structure doctrine”, arguing that the Supreme Court judgment in Keshavananda Bharati case has been held as a landmark ruling by all including the BJP luminaries for decades.
AICC spokesman Jairam Ramesh said, “In my 18 years as a MP, I have never heard anyone criticise the 1973 Kesavananda Bharati judgment of the Supreme Court. In fact, legal luminaries of BJP like Arun Jaitley hailed it as a milestone. Now, chairman of the Rajya Sabha says it was wrong. Extraordinary attack on the judiciary.”
Congress veteran P Chidambaram said, “Chairman of the Rajya Sabha is wrong when he says that Parliament is supreme. It is the Constitution that is supreme.”
